Effective door sealing for comfort and energy efficiency

Doors without seals allow drafts, cold, and noise to enter living and working spaces. The gap between the door leaf and the floor becomes an entry point for undesired influences and drives up heating costs. The problem is exacerbated with exterior doors: driving rain penetrates, sound insulation is lacking, and energy efficiency suffers. Traditional solutions such as thresholds provide sealing, but prevent barrier-free access.

Planet drop-down seals from ASSA ABLOY (Schweiz) AG provide a remedy: they automatically seal the door gap when the door closes and combine energy efficiency with sound insulation – without structural barriers. The drop-down seals are suitable for new buildings and renovations – from wooden, metal, and PVC doors to glazed doors. For exterior doors, Planet X3 and zero thresholds offer threshold-free construction at the main entrance – the most important entrance for accessible buildings.

What is a drop-down seal?

A drop-down seal (also called drop-down door seal or drop-down floor seal) automatically closes the gap between the door leaf and the floor. When the door is closed, the seal lowers and seals the gap. When the door is opened, it lifts up again without dragging on the floor.

The result: effective protection against drafts, noise, moisture, fire, smoke, and heat loss – without thresholds, ensuring barrier-free access.

Why drop-down seals are essential for doors

Modern buildings must meet high requirements in terms of energy efficiency, sound insulation, and accessibility. Doors play a central role in this – but the gap between the door and the floor often remains a weak point.

Challenges:

Loss of energy: heat escapes, heating costs rise

Noise level: noise penetrates unchecked

Humidity: driving rain against exterior doors damages floor coverings

Fire and smoke protection: doors are insufficiently protected against fire and smoke

Accessibility: thresholds obstruct access

Thresholds: sealing exterior doors comes only at the expense of accessibility

Light transmittance: disturbing light gap under the door

A professional drop-down seal solves these problems.

Frequently asked questions about Planet drop-down seals for doors

  • What is the difference between a drop-down deal and a normal door seal?

A normal door seal remains statically attached to the frame. A drop-down seal (also known as a door drop-down seal) automatically lowers when the door closes and seals the gap between the door and the floor. When the door opens, it rises again so it doesn’t drag on the floor. In combination with frame seals, drop-down floor seals therefore protect significantly better against drafts, noise, and energy loss than conventional seals.

  • Can I retrofit a drop-down floor seal?

Yes, drop-down floor seals can be easily retrofitted. Depending on the model, installation is carried out by fitting the seal into a groove, screwing it on, or gluing it on. Planet drop-down seals are particularly suitable for retrofitting: many variants automatically adapt to uneven floors. Installation is also possible during normal operation.

  • How can I adjust the drop-own seal on the door correctly?

All drop-down door seals have a stroke setting that allows you to optimally adjust the sealing lip to the floor clearance. For Planet drop-down seals, the adjustment is made with a 3 mm Allen key on the release knob. Turn the knob until the sealing lip seals cleanly against the floor when the door is closed – without applying too much pressure on the floor. The optimum setting is achieved when the lower door joint is light-proof.

  • Which drop-down seal is suitable for front doors?

For front doors, you need a door seal with high weather resistance that withstands driving rain. Planet X3 drop-down seals have been specially developed for exterior doors: they are 7A/9A certified to withstand driving rain and offer three simultaneous sealing movements (down, left, right). In combination with the click threshold system, a barrier-free zero threshold is created. With sound insulation values of up to 52 dB, moisture is reliably kept out as well as noise.
